WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today, Friday, September 10, 2004, the swearing in of Erna Kerst as its new Mission Director to Haiti. Erna Kerst was sworn in by Frederick Schieck, Deputy Administrator.
Ms. Kerst will oversee USAID's development program in Haiti that focuses on humanitarian assistance, strengthening Government of Haiti institutions, improving health services, reducing HIV/AIDS transmission and impact, job creation and economic growth, improving the quality of education, and promoting democracy.
A twenty-one year veteran of USAID, Ms. Kerst brings considerable experience and expertise to Haiti. She was most recently in long-term training, as a participant in the 46th class of the State Department's Senior Seminar, the premier training program for State senior career officers. She has twenty-one years of service with the Agency.
Since joining USAID in 1983, she has worked in Niger, Peru, Morocco, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Washington. She served as a Project Development Officer in Niger and Peru, as Regional Housing and Urban Development Officer in Morocco, as Deputy Mission Director in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and as Director for West African Affairs in USAID/Washington. Ms. Kerst also worked as a USAID contractor in Chad, Cameroon and Mauritania, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Chad, prior to joining in the Agency.
Ms. Kerst received her M.A. in Urban and Regional Planning and B.A. in History from Brown University.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
