WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has confirmed that verdicts have been rendered in the trial of persons involved in the murder of USAID officer Lawrence J. "Larry" Foley on October 28, 2002 in Amman, Jordan. Foley was shot to death outside his home in Amman on his way to work at USAID offices where he had worked since 2000 as the Agency's executive officer in Jordan.
"As President Bush has said, when terrorists harm Americans we will not rest until they are brought to justice. We want to thank Jordanian officials, police and security officers for their determined pursuit of these terrorist killers," said USAID Administrator Andrew S. Natsios in a statement today. "The USAID community, and particularly the family, friends and colleagues of Larry, can take some solace in the fact that Larry's murderers are being brought to justice."
Larry Foley was a dedicated public servant who committed his life to the service of others. A highly decorated foreign service officer, Foley had worked in public service for more than 37 years, volunteering with the Peace Corps, working for the rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders in California, and for the last 14 years serving with USAID.
As Administrator Natsios said following Foley's death in 2002: "No one in USAID embodied the spirit of compassion and brotherhood that underpins our efforts more than Larry Foley."
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
