WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President George W. Bush signed an executive order today that will lead to a center for faith- based initiatives at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). In keeping with the Bush Administration's commitment to combating poverty and facilitating access to better service delivery for the poor, the executive order makes it easier for faith-based organizations to work with the federal government.
USAID Administrator, Andrews S. Natsios praised the president's action, "President Bush's executive order to establish a center for faith-based and community initiatives at the U.S. Agency for International Development will enhance our current partnership with non-government and private voluntary organizations. USAID's long-standing successful partnerships with private voluntary organizations, including faith-based organizations, have been highly effective and efficient in implementing USAID programs around the world which non-government organizations are uniquely qualified to pursue. These partnerships help USAID maximize its resources. USAID's work with private voluntary partners accounted for 35 percent of USAID's development assistance programs from 1995-2000."
Natsios concluded, "the President's bold action today will help everyone refocus on how we can best serve the neediest."
U.S. Agency for International Development is the government agency that has provided humanitarian assistance and economic development worldwide for more than 40 years.
