WASHINGTON, DC -- Dr. H. Anne Peterson, USAID Assistant Administrator for Global Health, was honored at the American Public Health Association (APHA) on Sunday for her outstanding leadership as Virginia State Health Commissioner in assuring the public's health and safety in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the fall of 2001. Dr. Peterson was an honored guest at APHA's Public Health Heroes Gala, held on Sunday, November 10 in Philadelphia as part of the organization's 130th annual gathering.
APHA is the oldest and largest society of public health professionals in the country and one of the nations most respected and credible voices on public health issues. APHA has been in the forefront of numerous efforts to prevent disease and promote health. APHA created the Public Health Heroes Gala this year as a way to honor those who have provided significant leadership and commitment to service in the field of public health.
Dr. Peterson joined USAID in November 2001 after three years as the Virginia Health Commissioner. As the Assistant Administrator for Global Health, Dr. Peterson oversees the technical and program support of USAID's efforts in the areas of infectious disease control, reproductive health, child and maternal health, environmental health and nutrition. A recognized expert in international health issues, Dr. Peterson has served as a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in Haiti and Brazil, and also worked for several years in sub-Saharan Africa doing community development, public health training and AIDS prevention, and research in chronic disease prevention.
