WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of William Jeffers as its new Mission Director for Croatia. Jeffers was sworn in during a private ceremony at USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Drawing on his extensive experience in international development, including over 21 years with USAID, Jeffers will oversee a program that totaled nearly $44 million this year. In addition to its efforts in areas such as improving political processes, strengthening civil society and reintegrating war-affected populations, USAID has broadened its focus in Croatia and developed a new portfolio of activities that now includes a significant economic reform agenda as well as activities in social transition. This comes at a critical period for the country as it moves closer to the European Union and other western institutions, and distances itself from the conflicts of the 1990s.
Most recently Jeffers served as Director of Strategic Planning and Operations for USAID's Bureau for Asia and the Near East in Washington, D.C. From 1989 to 1990 he served in the Eastern Europe Task Force as a program officer, where he assisted in setting up USAID's first programs in Poland and Hungary. He joined the Foreign Service in 1984 and has also served in Botswana, Kenya and Sri Lanka. Jeffers has been a member of USAID's Senior Management Group since 1994.
A native of Kent, Ohio, Jeffers received his B.A. in Economics from the University of California and his M.A. from Columbia University in New York. He and wife Joanne and daughter A.J. are residents of Sarasota, Florida.
USAID is the government agency providing U.S. economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
