USAID Names New Mission Director For Albania

WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of Harry Birnholz as its new Mission Director for Albania. Lucretia Taylor, USAID's Chief of the Executive Management Staff, swore in Mr. Birnholz at USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Drawing on his extensive experience in international development, Mr. Birnholz will oversee USAID's $35 million program in Albania. The program focuses on strengthening democracy, promoting economic growth, developing programs to combat corruption and human trafficking, and improving the Albanian health care system.

A career Foreign Service Officer with USAID since 1979, Mr. Birnholz most recently served as Mission Director in Guinea. His USAID field experience also includes tours as Deputy Mission Director in Mali, AID Affairs Officer in Tel Aviv, and Regional Housing Officer in both Morocco and Tunisia. Prior to joining USAID, Mr. Birnholz worked in the Community Services Department of Citibank in New York. His extensive development background also includes positions as an emergency drought relief officer for the World Food Programme in Chad and as a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin.

Mr. Birnholz has a Masters degree in Urban Planning from Hunter College City University of New York, a Masters in International Affairs from Ohio University, and a BA from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is married and has two daughters.


USAID is the government agency providing U.S. economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
