Washington -- To prepare for the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, August 26 - September 4, the United States Government today issued the findings of a government-wide survey of global sustainable development initiatives. This survey conducted by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), covering more than 400 initiatives managed by 22 U.S. Government agencies, is the first such compilation for the U.S. Government.

"This overview of sustainable development initiatives assisted by the U.S. Government represents an extraordinary range and depth of commitment," said USAID Administrator Andrew S. Natsios. "The great majority of programs and projects are part of longer term initiatives and strategies in critically important areas such as building expertise, understanding and managing climate change, and preserving biodiversity. The U.S. intends to continue its programs and partnerships that strive to build a more sustainable world and we invite the international community to read this survey and join our efforts."

The full document, "Working for a Sustainable World: U.S. Government Initiatives to Promote Sustainable Development," including the entire survey results and a summary report, is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.usaid.gov/. This complete report also is available on CD-ROM, together with a printed summary report, from the Office of Public Affairs, USAID.

USAID is the government agency providing U.S. economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
