WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of Dr. James "Jim" E. Vermillion as its new Mission Director for Nicaragua. Dr. Vermillion was sworn in by Adolfo A. Franco, USAID's Assistant Administrator for Latin America and the Caribbean, at USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C. Drawing on his extensive experience in international development, Dr. Vermillion will oversee USAID's $34 million program in Nicaragua. The program focuses on strengthening democracy, promoting economic growth, and improving health and education.

"Dr. Vermillion's appointment as Mission Director comes at an important moment in Nicaragua's history, as the new Bolaņos administration is launching a bold anti-corruption campaign and macro-economic reform program," said Mr. Franco. "Jim's unique experience in these areas makes him the ideal person to meet the current challenges of this job."

A career Foreign Service Officer with USAID since 1984, Dr. Vermillion most recently served as Associate Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director in the Center for Democracy and Governance and Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator and Director of the Democracy Center. His field experience includes tours as the Deputy Mission Director for Haiti and Division Chief in Tunisia. Dr. Vermillion has also served in various other capacities in USAID's Washington headquarters, including Senior Policy Advisor in the Bureau for Policy and Program Coordination and Deputy Director of Trade and Investment in the Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean. Prior to joining USAID, Dr. Vermillion was Director of Research at Bell Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Vermillion has a PhD in Research Methodology and Education from the University of Virginia, a Masters degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Boston and a Masters degree in Administration, Supervision and Education from the University of South Florida. Dr. Vermillion is a widower and has one son.

USAID is the government agency providing U.S. economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
