WASHINGTON - Andrew Sisson was sworn in today as the Mission Director for the Regional Economic Development Services Office for East and Southern Africa (REDSO/ESA) for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) at USAID headquarters in Washington.

As Mission Director to REDSO/ESA, Sisson will oversee USAID's regional programs and non-presence country programs for Somalia, Sudan and Burundi. Combined, this totals over $44 million in development assistance to the region. The primary goal of the REDSO/ESA mission is to enhance African capacity to achieve regional food security, to manage conflict in the region and to improve health systems. The regional office not only manages regional programs in order to meet these goals but provides technical and logistical assistance to USAID bilateral missions in the region as well.

Sisson joined USAID in 1983 and was first assigned to Somalia. His other overseas posts include Rwanda, Ghana, India and Malawi. His most recent posting, completed in June 2002, was to Kosovo where he helped establish USAID's Kosovo mission. This is Sisson's first posting as a Mission Director.

Sisson was born in Boston, Mass. He is an economist and received a bachelor's degree from Williams College, a master's degree from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, based on field research in Cameroon. He is married to Karen Levine, a State Department Foreign Service Officer.

USAID is the government agency providing U.S. economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
