WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of Annette Adams as its new Mission Director for Guinea. Ms. Adams, the first woman Mission Director ever to serve in Guinea, was sworn in by USAID Administrator Andrew S. Natsios at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington.

Drawing on her extensive experience in developing countries, Ms. Adams will take charge of USAID's $25 million program in Guinea. The program includes assistance in the areas of education, health, environment, and humanitarian assistance. Ms. Adams will also work with the Government of Guinea to sustain recent achievements in the area of good governance and democratic initiatives.

"Although there are many challenges, Guinea has made significant strides forward in recent years, particularly in the areas of agricultural production, natural resources management, primary school enrollment and in instituting positive political and economic reforms," said Adams. "I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with the people of Guinea to achieve even more significant progress in these and other areas on a forward path."

With close to 25 years of experience in international development, Ms. Adams served most recently as the Deputy Mission Director for the Regional USAID program in Botswana. Previously, Ms. Adams worked for USAID in Botswana, Senegal, Hungary, Panama, and Peru. Prior to joining USAID, she was an Assistant Professor of Law at Wayne State University of Law and also worked as an Associate with a law firm in Detroit, Michigan.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Ms. Adams has a Bachelor's degree from Barnard College of Columbia University, as well as degrees from Harvard Law School and Vanderbilt University Law School. Ms. Adams is a member of the bar association in both Michigan and the District of Columbia.

USAID is the government agency providing U.S. economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
