More Images Available for PublicationThrough the International Organization for Migration, USAID will distribute more than 30,000 radios that enable Afghans to hear special broadcast bulletins concerning food distribution, security, health care and other information relevant to displaced people. These specialized radio bulletins, broadcast by international radio networks such as the BBC and the VOA and funded by USAID, are broadcast in the local languages of Pashto and Dari.

The following information provided to USAID by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in late December provides an update on the implementation of this vital activity.
Radio distribution
Distribution is complete in Herat, Taloqan and Kunduz. In Andkhoi, 1,600 radios were distributed to 1,620 identified internally displaced persons (IDPs). An additional 6,720 radios are being distributed in the Faryab region with another 11,820 due to arrive on 30 December. In all areas, the neediest IDPs are receiving radios and batteries as part of the assistance packages IOM distributes. In addition, distribution has also targeted others in need, including:

HEAR Bulletin
The HEAR bulletin has been produced and broadcast on a daily basis (Monday -- Friday) since 20 December 2001. The bulletins are sent to the VOA which broadcasts them on their daily Pashtu and Dari service. They are also sent to the BBC Pashtu service and great interest has been shown by Kabul radio to broadcast them as well. We are actively pursuing efficient mechanisms for Kabul and other local radio in Afghanistan to receive the bulletin and broadcast them, as well as to eventually provide input for the bulletin from their own locality, thus building their own information gathering and distribution capacity. HEAR staff will also shortly expand their staff of stringers in Afghanistan in order to have access to more field-based, first-person input.
