WASHINGTON -- A prize-winning documentary produced by the Amy Biehl Foundation aimed at reducing violence in South Africa will be shown this Thursday on Capitol Hill under the sponsorship of the House International Relations Committee.

The film, "Long Night's Journey into Day," features several cases examined by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including the murder of Amy Biehl, an American Fulbright Scholar who was killed in 1993 outside Capetown. The film took top prize for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival as well as the Peace Film Prize at the Berlin Film Festival.

Following her death, Amy Biehl's parents established the foundation in her name to "weave a barrier against violence" in and around Capetown. The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided $2.345 million to the foundation to support its strategies to deter violence.

The foundation supports disadvantaged youth and their families through skills development, recreational opportunities, academic support and by teaching basic health care. It also operates a community bakery.

The showing is being sponsored by Reps. Edward R. Royce, Amo Houghton and Donald M. Payne. Royce is the chairman of the Africa Subcommittee; Houghton is the vice chairman and Payne is the senior Democrat on the panel.

For more information on USAID's programs with the Amy Biehl Foundation please contact the USAID press office at 202-712-4320.
