Care and Treatment
HIV/AIDS is an enduring pandemic that
must be fought with both prevention and care. The virus most
often strikes those whose lives are already beset by poverty
and hardship in countries where governments cannot afford
to provide treatment or life-prolonging medication. Providing
care and treatment can help to stabilize and improve the physical
and mental health of individuals living with or affected by
HIV/AIDS, and can also reduce the social, psychological, and
economic burden of HIV/AIDS on families and communities. USAID
is demonstrating its commitment to bringing critical care
and treatment services to communities affected by HIV/AIDS
in the developing world, through innovative programs, partnerships
with the private sector and community- and faith-based organizations,
and research to find the best approaches and determine ways
to bring them to scale. USAID’s care and treatment activities
include introducing antiretroviral therapy, home-based care,
prevention and treatment of tuberculosis and other opportunistic
infections, support for children affected by HIV/AIDS, nutrition
and food aid, psychosocial and palliative care, and microfinance.
