OVERVIEW
The USAID Privacy Office, in conjunction the Bureau for Management, conducted a PIA of the AIDNet GSS. The AIDNET GSS is the interconnected set of information resources under the common management control of, and which provide the common functionality as the local area network (LAN) for USAID.

INFORMATION COLLECTION (WHAT)
The AIDNet is the general support system (GSS) for the Agency. The GSS does not directly collect, maintain or disseminate personally identifiable information (PII). It is the backbone of the agency's information systems consisting of servers, routers, firewalls, and other infrastructure components. This integrated set of hardware and software components provides the technological platform on which other agency systems reside, interconnects the USAID Missions, authenticates the employee and contractor personnel, provides a suite of common desktop applications for their use, and provides network file storage and printing services.

INFORMATION SECURITY
Administrative controls include information security training before access to the network is provided. Thereafter, information security awareness training is provided through USAID's Tips of the Day application. In addition, all employees and contractors obtaining access to USAID's information systems must meet the vetting requirements outlined in Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 before obtaining a network account.
Technical controls for logical access to the AIDNet GSS are secured by the use of user ids and passwords. USAID also employs restricted access to the desktop workstations from which the system is accessed.
Physical access to the AIDNet GSS is controlled through the use of guards, card reader technology, identifications badges and cipher locks.
The AIDNet GSS is considered to be a "moderate" system under NIST Security Categorization criteria and appropriate security controls are in place as specified in FIPS-199.

The AIDNet GSS is not a system of record as defined by the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended.
