A wheelchair is more than just an aid to mobility.
It can be a means to self-sufficiency and increased
self-esteem. It can be a vehicle to meaningful employment and a wider range of community, social, and
family interaction. |
Conservative estimates put the number of people with disabilities in developing
countries at close to half a billion. Of these people, an
estimated 20 million require wheelchairs to be mobile. Despite
this overwhelming need, only a small percentage are able to
obtain an appropriate wheelchair; the training needed to assist
them in functioning in the wheelchair and obtaining their
maximum independence; or the opportunities to be contributing
members of their families, communities, and society. Many
humanitarian and development agencies are involved in prosthetics
and orthotics programs, but few offer a comprehensive approach
to providing services and training to those requiring wheelchairs.
