Pan-Africa: Prosthetic Training Center

Prosthetic Training Center

Map of Africa. Highlighted countries show locations of ICRC-supported rehabilitation centers.

The ICRC/SFD supports 31 rehabilitation centers in 17 countries. Shown are countries where centers are located and number of centers per country. The ICRC/SFD provides raw materials and equipment, physiotherapy training sessions, and scholarships for students to attend 3-4 year P&O Category I and Category II certification training programs.

Implementing Partners: International Committee of the Red Cross Special Fund for the Disabled (ICRC/SFD)

Funding Period: September 2002 – September 2009

Amount: $6,500,000

Purpose: Promote the quality and accessibility of prosthetic and orthotic services for low-income patients in sub-Saharan Africa.

Location: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Somalia, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Objectives: The ICRC Special Fund for the Disabled aims to ensure the continuity of ICRC programs for populations affected by conflict or war, and supports other physical rehabilitation centers in low-income countries.

Its immediate objectives are to enhance access, quality, and durability of rehabilitation services, through a combination of material/financial, technical, and training support to assisted centers.

In Africa, through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), USAID provides support to thirty-one small-scale rehabilitation workshops. In most instances, these workshops are staffed by one to two people and are located in rural, often inaccessible, places. After training workshop staff in rehabilitation practices and workshop management, the ICRC provides ongoing support to those workshops. It provides durable materials and mentoring on a rotating basis. The ICRC's approach has increased access to rehabilitation services for clients who cannot make the journey to a provincial town center.

Each year, ICRC projects provide orthopedic devices and services to more than 10,000 people.
