President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)
Launched in 2003, PEPFAR has devoted $18.8 billion to a three-pronged approach for combating HIV/AIDS: prevention, treatment and care. PEPFAR represents the largest commitment ever by any country to stamp out a single disease. The U.S. Government recently reauthorized up to $48 billion of additional PEPFAR funding through 2013 that will enable the implementing agencies, including USAID, to carry out prevention programs, distribute antiretroviral medications and care for those affected by HIV/AIDS, especially orphans and vulnerable children.
While emphasizing transparency and accountability, PEPFAR has provided some 2.1 million people access to life-saving antiretroviral treatment since the program’s inception. USAID implemented its first HIV/AIDS programs in 1986, so its long history of combating the disease makes it uniquely positioned to assist in fulfilling PEPFAR’s mission. The Agency’s foreign service officers, physicians, epidemiologists and public health experts form a dynamic team that works in an integrated fashion alongside private voluntary organizations, governments and the private sector in the pursuit of PEPFAR’s goals.
