In the 50 years since its creation, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Food for Peace program has sent 106 million metric tons of food overseas, keeping more than three billion people from hunger, malnutrition and starvation, while creating thousands of jobs in the United States and abroad. Over the years, more than 150 countries have received Food for Peace aid.

Currently, one billion people world-wide confront hunger, up an estimated 100 million people since 2001. Food for Peace recognizes that hunger in today’s world is caused by more than just a lack of food. Often it is the consequence of the collapse of a country’s agricultural, economic, political, and trading systems.

Food for Peace not only provides emergency food to those who desperately need it, but also gives them the means to address their own long-term food needs. To do so, Food for Peace activities seek to improve peoples’ understanding of nutrition and health, promote the latest sustainable agricultural practices, and train people in new ways of earning extra income.
