Pakistan - Floods II

Brief Description: Since June 26, increased snowmelt due to high seasonal temperatures has led to a rise in river levels and damage in the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP) in Pakistan. Heavy snowmelt caused the Kabul and Swat rivers to overflow, displacing more than 4,000 people and destroying more than 500 homes and 6,000 acres of agricultural land. The most serious flood damage occurred in the districts of Nowshera, Peshawar, Chardassa, and Chitral. The NWFP provincial government successfully evacuated the most at-risk populations in the area and, thus far, has not reported any casualties. According to local media reports, the NWFP provincial government is preparing to evacuate several additional communities, including an Afghan refugee camp currently housing almost 20,000 people.
