Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Floods, 07-25-2008

Heavy rainfall in mid-July caused flooding in several villages of Niger’s central region of Zinder.  Initial Government of Niger (GON) assessments indicated that the flooding affected 22,556 individuals, representing 2,339 households.  According to the U.S. Embassy in Niamey, the GON provided temporary shelter in local schools and distributed food to flood-affected families.  The floods also destroyed a bridge, three mosques, and several businesses and submerged a number of agricultural fields.

On July 25, U.S. Ambassador Bernadette M. Allen issued a disaster declaration due to the effects of the floods in Niger.  In response, USAID/OFDA provided $50,000 through the U.S. Embassy in Niamey to the Nigerien Red Cross for the local purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies.

For information on additional USAID disaster responses, please see OFDA Annual Reports.
