Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Wildfires, 07-25-2007
In July 2007, heat wave-related wildfires throughout Macedonia consumed more than 3,000 hectares of forests in
32 municipalities. According to the U.S. Embassy in Skopje, the fires caused one death due to smoke inhalation and
directly impacted approximately half of Macedonia’s population of 2 million people. On July 18, the Government of Macedonia
(GOM) declared a state of emergency due to the high temperatures and wildfires. As of July 24, firefighters from Macedonia
and neighboring countries were battling 28 different blazes, and conditions were worsening daily. Several of the fires were
located in the vicinity of major urban areas, threatening vital infrastructure and lives.
On July 25, U.S. Ambassador Gillian A. Milovanovic declared a disaster due to loss of property and livelihoods from the wildfires.
In response, USAID/OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Macedonia to assist emergency responders in fighting the wildfires.
