Most Recent Disaster Declaration:
Floods, 11-10-2009
In early November 2009, heavy, constant rain fell in El Salvador as an indirect effect of recent tropical depressions and Hurricane Ida. Heaviest accumulations occurred on November 7. Reports issued by the Government of El Salvador (GoES) national disaster response and relief organization on November 12, indicated that associated flooding and landslides resulted in the deaths of more than 157 individuals, caused 58 persons to be reported missing, and displaced more than 14,096 others. GoES authorities established approximately 132 temporary shelters for displaced persons. The U.S. Embassy in San Salvador reported that the flooding and landslides affected the departments of San Salvador, Cuscatlán, La Paz, San Vicente, and La Libertad, with the most significant damage reported in San Vicente and La Paz. Damage to roads and bridges also occurred. The President of El Salvador declared a state of emergency for the five affected departments and requested international assistance.
On November 10, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Robert Blau declared a disaster in response to the damage caused by the tropical depressions and Hurricane Ida. In response, USAID/OFDA provided $100,000 for the purchase of water, blankets, and aviation fuel to assist affected populations. In addition USAID/OFDA deployed disaster response experts to assist with damage evaluations and USAID/OFDA airlifted relief commodities, including 200 rolls of reinforced plastic sheeting, 5,400 ten-liter water containers, 5,088 hygiene kits, and two 5,000-gallon water bladders, worth $180,000 including transport, to El Salvador.
