Kenya - Drought

Regional Team: ECA

Disaster Declared:
01/09/2006

Brief Description:
Poor rainfall in November and December 2005 exacerbated water shortages in drought-affected eastern and northern pastoral districts and the southeastern lowland cropping areas of Kenya. USAID’s Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) reported significant livestock deaths and reduced productivity due to lack of water and pasture, leading to little or no milk availability in households. As a result, rates of child malnutrition increased dramatically in parts of the most-affected districts of Wajir, Mandera and Marsabit, with global acute malnutrition (GAM) rates ranging from 18 to 30 percent. In February 2006, FEWS NET estimated that more than 3 million people faced extreme food insecurity, requiring food assistance through February 2007.

On January 9, 2006, U.S. Ambassador William M. Bellamy declared a disaster due to ongoing drought conditions and requested OFDA assistance. In accordance with the request, OFDA committed $350,000 to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for emergency nutrition and health programs to support drought relief efforts in Kenya.
