Assistance Provided:
11/12/2004

Brief Description:
On November 12, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck the Indonesian island of Alor in East Nusa Tenggara Province at 5:26 am local time. In addition, a 6.4 magnitude aftershock occurred approximately one hour later. According to local and international media reports, 16 people have been confirmed dead and at least 200 others are injured. However, this toll could still rise as rescue workers reach additional areas. In addition, the earthquake damaged more than 600 homes and the local airport in Kalabahi. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta reports that the local hospital in Kalabahi is overloaded and search and rescue efforts are underway.
