Disaster Declared: 05/27/06

Brief Description: A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java on May 27, 2006, at 05:54 local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 25 kilometers southwest of Yogyakarta city, and Central Java and Yogyakarta are the most affected provinces. As of June 2, the Government of Indonesia (GOI) reported more than 6,200 deaths and more than 46,000 injuries. The earthquake destroyed or heavily damaged an estimated 140,000 homes, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

On May 27, U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia B. Lynn Pascoe declared a disaster due to the magnitude of damage caused by the earthquake, and OFDA provided an immediate $100,000 through the Indonesian Red Cross to meet immediate needs. A nine-person USAID Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) in Yogyakarta is working closely with the Department of Defense (DOD), the USAID Mission Page, and the U.S. Embassy to identify needs, recommend appropriate assistance, and ensure coordination with international relief agencies and the GOI. Immediately following the earthquake, USAID airlifted emergency relief supplies to affected areas, and DOD is providing medical care via a U.S. military field hospital. OFDA has pledged $5 million for earthquake response activities.
