Indian Ocean - Earthquake and Tsunamis

Brief Description: According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia on December 26 at 6:58 a.m. local time. The earthquake had a depth of 10 km and triggered massive tsunamis that affected several countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, and the east African coast. USAID/OFDA deployed a regional Disaster Assistance Response Team USAID/DART) including OFDA regional advisors, water and sanitation experts, field officers, and information officers. More than 40 USAID/DART members were deployed to Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, the Maldives, and Thailand, to coordinate the U.S. Government (USG) humanitarian response to the earthquake and tsunami emergency. The earthquake and resulting tsunami killed more than 150,000 people in 10 countries and approximately 100,000 others remain missing. OFDA contributed more than $80 million to the response.
