Hungary - Floods

Map of Hungary
Map of Hungary

Regional Team: EMCA

Disaster Declared:
04/07/2006

Brief Description:
In March and April 2006, heavy rains combined with unseasonably warm weather caused rapid snow melt and flooding along 3,800 km of the Danube and other waterways.  The flooding damaged roads, stranding people in villages north of Budapest.  In total, the flood affected more than 32,000 people.

On April 7, U.S. Ambassador to Hungary George H. Walker declared a disaster due to the damage caused by the flooding.  In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through the USAID Regional Services Center in Budapest to Hungarian Baptist Aid and United Way Hungary for the procurement and distribution of emergency relief supplies to flood-affected populations.
