Ethiopia - Earthquake and Volcanic Eruption

Map of Ethiopia:
Map of Ethiopia

Regional Team: ECA

Disaster Declared:
10/13/05

Brief Description :
Following a magnitude 5.5 earthquake on September 24, 2005, the Arteala Volcano in Afar Region erupted on September 26, emitting plumes of volcanic ash and smoke and blanketing surrounding areas. A subsequent 4.2 tremor in early October led to further volcanic activity, damaging roads and covering large areas of pasture lands with lava. On October 5, the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (GFDRE) reported that the eruption had displaced approximately 6,500 people from Dadaho and Boyana villages in Teru District. While no human casualties were reported, the earthquake and volcanic eruption killed an estimated 1,000 animals, including sheep, goats, and camels.

On October 13, U.S. Chief of Mission in Ethiopia Vicki J. Huddleston issued a disaster declaration due to the damage caused by the earthquakes and volcanic activity. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Ethiopia to the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) for emergency health and nutrition interventions for the affected population in Afar Region.
