Ecuador - Floods

Map of Ecuador:
Map of Ecuador

Regional Team: LAC

Disaster Declared:
04/12/06

Brief Description:
Since early February 2006, heavy rains and extensive flooding in the coastal provinces of El Oro, Guayas, Los Ríos, and Manabí have killed 16 people and affected 140,000 others, according to Ecuador’s Civil Defense authorities. In addition, the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) reports that 55,000 people are displaced in the affected areas. The floods have caused extensive damage to agriculture and disrupted the supply of clean water.

On April 12, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Ecuador Jefferson T. Brown issued a disaster declaration due to damage caused by the flooding. In response, OFDA is providing $50,000 to USAID/Ecuador for the purchase and distribution of relief supplies. This assistance will be channeled through an implementing partner being determined by USAID/Ecuador in consultation with OFDA Regional Advisors. OFDA will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
