Disaster Declared: 4/17/2006
Brief Description: Erratic and below-average rains in 2005 and early 2006 resulted in severe water shortages in Djibouti's northern, southern, and northwestern districts. In January 2006, USAID's Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) reported that up to 150,000 people were at risk of a humanitarian emergency. According to FEWS NET, the drought also degraded pastures and caused the deaths of significant numbers of livestock. On March 3, 2006, the Government of Djibouti declared a humanitarian emergency in affected districts.
On April 17, 2006, U.S. Ambassador to Djibouti Marguerita Dianne Ragsdale declared a disaster in Djibouti in the districts of Tadjourah, Dikhil, Ali Sabieh, and Obock due to the ongoing drought and requested OFDA assistance. In accordance with the request, OFDA committed $200,000 to the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) for emergency immunizations and nutritional surveillance activities.
