Czech Republic - Floods

Disaster Declared: 04/07/2006

Brief Description: In late March and early April 2006, severe flooding in 7 of the 14 regions in the Czech Republic caused evacuations of more than 5,000 people and growing concern about a possible disease outbreak. The floods killed nine people, disrupted electricity supplies, damaged train tracks, and ruined many secondary roads. Additionally, the flood waters resulted in increased risk of vectorial disease that can spread rapidly with mosquitoes breeding in standing water.

On April 7, U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic William J. Cabaniss declared a disaster due to the damage caused by the flooding. In response to the disaster and the risk of vectorial disease, OFDA provided $30,250 through the USAID Regional Services Center in Budapest, Hungary, for the transport of larvicide to affected areas.
