Angola - Cholera Epidemic

Brief Description: During early April 2006, heavy rainfall exacerbated an existing cholera outbreak in Angola and caused the number of new cases to increase significantly. According to the U.S. Embassy in Luanda, 700 to 850 new cases of cholera surfaced each day during the height of the epidemic, in contrast to 5 to 10 new cases per day in previous weeks.

On April 19, U.S. Ambassador to Angola Cynthia G. Efird declared a disaster due to the cholera outbreak.  In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Angola to the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support UNICEF’s Cholera Intervention Plan.
