Brief Description: Two decades
of war in Afghanistan, compounded by a regional drought, have
impoverished the country and resulted in an extended humanitarian
crisis. The Coalition-led military campaign against al Qaeda
and Taliban forces began on October 7, 2001, and by December
2001, the Taliban regime had collapsed. The new Afghan Interim
Authority (AIA) was sworn in on December 22, 2001, increasing
humanitarian access to the country and beginning the process
of reconstruction. Approximately 2.5 million people have been
displaced by the regional crisis in Central Asia. Since 1990,
the USG has provided more than $845 million to assist vulnerable
populations in the Central Asia Region.
