Bolivia - Floods

Regional Team: LAC

Disaster Declared:
01/31/2006

Brief Description:
Unseasonably heavy rainfall since mid-January 2006 in eight of Bolivia's nine departments caused widespread flooding, landslides, and the overflow of major rivers. According to the Bolivian National Civil Defense, at the peak of the emergency, the flooding affected approximately 175,000 people and isolated many rural communities.

On January 31, 2006, U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia David N. Greenlee issued a disaster declaration due to the widespread impact of the flooding. In response, OFDA airlifted emergency relief items, such as plastic sheeting, water bladders, water containers, blankets, and hygiene kits. OFDA also provided funding through USAID/Bolivia for in-country transport and distribution of these relief supplies. The value of this assistance totaled more than $300,000.
