Methane to Markets Partnership
View APS Announcement (PDF, 3 pp., 52 KB)
The Methane to Markets Partnership is an action-oriented initiative that will reduce global methane emissions to enhance economic growth, promote energy security, improve the environment, and reduce greenhouse gases. Other benefits include improving mine safety, reducing waste, and improving local air quality. The initiative focuses on cost-effective, near-term methane recovery and use as a clean energy source. It will be done internationally through collaboration between developed countries, developing countries, and countries with economies in transition - together with strong participation from the private sector. The Methane to Markets Partnership initially targets three major methane sources: landfills, underground coal mines, and natural gas and oil systems.

GDA APS Announcement Encourages Proposals for M2M Public-Private Partnerships
USAID's Global Development Alliance (GDA) business model is a mechanism by which the private sector and other non-traditional partners can work in collaboration with USAID on at least a 1:1 ratio to achieve mutually beneficial development goals. The 2004 GDA Annual Program Statement (APS) is an open solicitation for public private alliance in the sectors and countries in which USAID operates. This APS Announcement for M2M project proposals is not an amendment but rather a special call for proposals focusing on methane recovery projects.
For details on how organizations can submit proposals for M2M public-private alliances using the GDA APS, please read the APS Announcement (PDF, 3 pp., 52 KB).
Methane to Markets Partnership: Private Sector Outreach Workshop and APS Announcement
On June 9, 2005, USAID, EPA and other USG agencies, in conjunction with the American Petroleum Institute, Solid Waste Association of North America, and National Mining Association, conducted a one-day workshop to engage private sector entities interested in developing methane emissions reduction and use projects internationally.
The workshop:
- Described the importance of methane recovery and use as a viable, profitable, and sustainable tool for international development.
- Clarified the services that USG agencies are prepared to offer to the private sector for promoting and facilitating methane recovery.
- Solicited concept papers for public-private alliances under the GDA APS related to the President's announcement on the International Methane to Markets Partnership.
- Engaged the private sector in a dialogue about barriers to methane recovery, areas where the USG can further support the methane recovery industry, and countries to focus on in the future.
- Was well attended and received by industry participants from the oil and gas, coal and landfill sectors.
