Data Collection and Analysis
The Demographic and Health Surveys
(DHS) program, primarily funded by USAID, is one of
the world's largest primary sources of information on
women, men, and their families in Africa, Asia, Latin
America, and the Caribbean. Since 1984, the program
has been working with developing country institutions
to conduct national surveys on family planning, maternal
and child health, household living conditions, HIV/AIDS,
and the sexual behavior of young adults. The quality
of this information increases the credibility of reproductive
health information for policy, planning, and program
evaluation. This information is used by policy makers
and program managers in developing countries and the
donor community to assess impact and to make informed
decisions about program design and management.
