On April 24th, 2009, Peter Bodde , the U.S. Ambassador of Malawi, hosted high-level Malawi Government officials, policymakers, community leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, and multi-lateral organizations at his residence for a presentation on “The Effects of Rapid Population Growth on Development in Malawi” by retired senior Foreign Service Officer, Margaret Neuse.
The presentation highlighted how improved availability and use of family planning services can positively influence the agriculture, education, and health sectors, which are considered key areas for economic growth. Family planning can also help sustain peace and security.
The census undertaken in 2008 shows that Malawi has a population just over 13 million, registering growth rates of 2.8 percent per year. “If these trends continue, it will only take Malawi 25 years to double its population, this is especially startling when we consider that Malawi is already one of the most densely populated countries in Africa” noted Ambassador Bodde. Chisale Mhango, a Reproductive Health Advisor for the Ministry added, “when you talk to leaders in the rural areas, they say they spend most of their time discussing land ownership disputes, a clear sign that the people can not split their property any further.”
Commenting on large families rural communities, Senior Chief Kaomba stated: “Gone are the days when one can be proud of having a large family.” Ambassador Bodde has raised the importance of family planning with the highest levels of Government of Malawi as well as other Chiefs of Mission, and has received strong statements of support to address this issue.
