Ghana

Using regional quality assurance teams, USAID helped the National Reproductive Health Program disseminate, apply, and revise three standards, guidelines, and protocols, and monitor their use. In addition, 11 other health standards, guidelines, protocols, norms, and procedures for service delivery were reviewed. Formative research on misconceptions about reproductive health and family planning was completed. Contraceptive forecasting and procurement practices of the Ghana Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Services were assessed and recommendations made to strengthen the procurement unit to obtain contraceptives from the international market.

To address the contraceptive funding gap for 2005, USAID coordinated with other donors and the government of Ghana to implement Ghana’s Contraceptive Security Strategy. However, narrowing the funding gap for the timeframe beyond 2006 is still a key issue for the government.
