USAID Helps Launch Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Under-Nutrition
A new five-part series on maternal and child under-nutrition was launched by The Lancet on January 16, 2008, as part of a landmark series of research papers expected to bring international attention to the critical role of early nutrition in the health and development of children and the economic growth of nations. This series, published in The Lancet, reviews and analyzes the effectiveness and potential impact of nutrition-related interventions and policy options and also includes recommended actions to accelerate efforts to improve maternal and child under-nutrition.
“At USAID, our philosophy is that improved health for the world's poorest people is not only a moral imperative, but also a pragmatic investment for peace, security, and worldwide economic growth. Health is strategically important to the success of virtually every other aspect of a development portfolio,“ said Dr. Kent R. Hill, Assistant Administrator, Bureau for Global Health, in his speech at the Washington, D.C. launch of The Lancet series.

USAID Condom Campaign Reduces Stigma and Wins Prestigious Award
The Bindaas Bol (Just Say It) condom campaign, developed for the USAID-funded Program for Advancement of Commercial Technology – Child and Reproductive Health (PACT-CRH) with technical assistance by Private Sector Partnerships-One (PSP-One) project, was awarded the ad industry's highest honor, the Grand Effie Award for the most effective advertising campaign in 2007. The innovative, multi-faceted campaign aimed at normalizing the image of condoms and the condom user and focused on eliminating a preliminary barrier – talking about condoms. The campaign helped to increase condom use by married men with their spouses by over 30 percent in urban north Indian states.
This is the first time a social communication campaign has been awarded the Grand Effie, a clear message that if done well, health communication can work as effectively as commercial advertising.

New Technical Brief – The Lactational Amenorrhea Method: A Postpartum Contraceptive Choice for Women Who Breastfeed
The Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) is a modern, temporary contraceptive method based on natural infertility resulting from certain patterns of breastfeeding. This brief, developed by the Office of Population and Reproductive Health’s ACCESS-FP Project, is intended to guide health care providers in offering LAM within maternal and child health, reproductive health or family planning programs. It describes LAM, the advantages of the method, and the criteria for use. Key elements of LAM services are addressed in the brief as are optimal breastfeeding behaviors.
