Call to Action: New Consensus in International Development

Remarks by Henrietta H. Fore, Acting USAID Administrator at the Society for International Development 50th Anniversary Address September 6, 2007

Henrietta H. Fore, Acting USAID Administrator

If, as I believe, we are entering a new era of international development… a Global Development Commons where the connections between our organizations and resources matter more than ever… an era when we need to leverage information, ideas, technology, and public-private partnerships to spur innovation and deliver results… when host countries must be at the center of our collective thought and action…

Then today, and over the next seventeen months, I will be working with you to help forge a New Consensus about the future of international development.

You'll find me a great collaborator. This job is a home-coming for me and I hope it will be for many of you. Our friends at State, in the MCC and PEPFAR, and in the Congress are supporting our interests -- and we couldn't ask for a better sponsor or more powerful advocate than Secretary Rice.

To our many shared stakeholders, I would suggest that we put at least as much energy into communicating what unites us as declaring our differences and inevitable shortcomings.

For there is one thing of which I am absolutely certain: A New Consensus will only emerge if -- together -- we seek it.

USAID Assists Latin America and Caribbean during 2007 Hurricane Season

Photo: Aftermath of Hurricane Dean in Jamaica After making landfall on September 4 as a category five hurricane, Felix moved inland over northeastern Nicaragua and Honduras. The hurricane severely impacted Honduras and Nicaragua, and resulted in heavy rainfall in Guatemala and Belize.

In coordination with the Nicaraguan Red Cross, USAID emergency teams are conducting assessments of four of the most affected communities in Nicaragua on September 7. The teams are reaching the impacted areas via U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) helicopters, which will return to the assessed areas with relief supplies.

On September 6, the first of four USAID/OFDA relief flights arrived in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, with 120 rolls of plastic sheeting, 1,500 blankets, and 1,536 hygiene kits. A second relief flight, carrying the same amount of commodities, is scheduled to arrive in Nicaragua on September 7. The total value of both airlifts, including transport, is approximately $200,000. The third and fourth airlifts, containing an additional 360 rolls of plastic sheeting and other essential commodities, will arrive in Nicaragua in the coming days. An initial distribution of the USAID/OFDA relief supplies began on September 7 in Sandy Bay and surrounding communities. (Source)
