    Awards for Environment

  • The largest monetary award -- at $1 million it is about $100,000 more than the Nobel -- is the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, which this year went to St. Christopher's Hospice and Dame Cicely Saunders
  • The $300,000 Zayed International Prize for the Environment, is the largest environment prize in the world and sponsored by the United Arab Emirates
  • The $125,000 Goldman Environmental Prize is given to grassroots environmentalists (this year's award winners included two Paraguayan activists fighting a World Bank-financed dam)
  • The King Baudouin International Development Prize (about $200,000) is awarded every two years to individuals or organizations that are making a significant contribution to the advancement of developing countries. Last year's prize went to Fundecor (Fundacion para el Desarrollo de la Cordillera Volcanica Central) in Costa Rica, which has been involved in designing innovative community-based approaches to environmental protection.
