Higher Education for Development Summit

logo, Higher Education SummitOn April 29-30, 2008 USAID and the U.S. Departments of State and Education convened a Higher Education Summit for Global Development. The purpose of the summit, which was attended by more than 200 higher education leaders from 71 developed and developing countries and more than 40 corporate and foundation executives, was to expand the role and impact of U.S. and foreign higher education institutions in worldwide social and economic development. Specific summit aims included:

  • Broaden partnerships and networks among U.S., other developed country and developing country higher education institutions
  • Highlight and expand innovative approaches to teaching, research, technology transfer and business development
  • Develop strategies to establish new and enduring higher education relationships for international development, particularly in science and technology, engineering and other fields that support innovation and economic growth

The summit showcased more than 25 innovative alliances and programs and helped to identify new partners for collaborative initiatives. The Summit also laid the groundwork for regional follow-up meetings in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
