Reducing Indoor Smoke and Illness for Women and Children:
A Model Project in Peru

Infants are usually present when cooking takes place in Inkawasi and are at high risk of ARI. Photo: Winrock InternationalMost rural indigenous people of Latin America live in poverty in communities that rely heavily on biomass and other solid fuels for cooking and heating. Communities at higher elevations in particular are often exposed to severe levels of indoor smoke from inefficient burning of fuels in open fires or rudimentary stoves in poorly ventilated spaces. Exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP) poses a serious health risk of respiratory infection, causing illness and even death for those who spend the most time in the home cooking environment, namely women and children.

Peru Healthy Kitchen/Healthy Stove Pilot ProjectUSAID has developed a model to reduce indoor air pollution by combining fuel-efficient cooking technologies with behavior change messages and market-based distribution mechanisms. A rural project model was piloted among indigenous communities in the highlands of Peru.

Funding for this work was provided by the Energy Team of USAID’s Office of Infrastructure and Engineering and the Environmental Health Team of the Bureau for Global Health via a cooperative agreement with Winrock International.
