Country Snapshot: Georgia and Legal Rights

USAID/Georgia has supported a series of activities aimed at providing the legal community with a clear definition of human rights.

Legal Rights for Women

USAID supported the provision of legal advice on reforms that would facilitate Georgia's transition to a market-oriented democracy, including the Administrative Code (with a Freedom of Information Act section), the Law on Local Self-Government, and the Local Election Law.

In addition, the USAID-supported Women's Center prepared and published a series of brochures with excerpts from laws pertaining to women's and families' rights.

Given the lack of legislation protecting women's rights, USAID and the American Bar Association are supporting a group of Georgian lawyers who are developing a Domestic Violence legislative package. The package is scheduled to be presented to Georgia's Parliament in the spring of 2005.
