Country Snapshot: Georgia and Health

USAID's primary health care activities help to improve health care services tailored to the distinct needs of women and men.

Health Centers

At the USAID-supported Mtskheta Primary Health Care Center and the Kutaisi Women's Wellness Center, over 350 health care professionals, 75 percent of whom are women, have been trained in infection prevention and control.

In addition, over 10,000 patients living in rural areas have been served at the Kutaisi Women's Wellness Center, a health service facility that specializes in women's reproductive health, as well as other rural primary health facilities. Maternal, child, and reproductive health activities directly benefit women for whom illness often results in an unaffordable cost and a loss of income.

HIV/AIDS prevention efforts take gender into account by targeting high risk groups and slowing the spread of HIV/AIDS to the general population. For example, most women are now infected through the high-risk behavior of their male partners, which points to the need for better prevention among men to prevent new infections in women.
