East Timor Fast Facts Header

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is a new country. It gained its independence from Indonesia and ratified its Constitution in 2002. East Timor held its first elections in September 2001 and elected 24 women to the Constituent Assembly. Today women constitute 25% of the Assembly.

Twice as many women die in childbirth in East Timor than anywhere else in the Western Pacific or East Asia. Some 200 midwives serve a population of 924,642 (2004 national census).

USAID/East Timor's programs focus on benefiting families, including both men and women. Activities with a more explicitly stated gender component support economic growth by strengthening women-owned micro-enterprises and providing both women and men with technical assistance and training in agriculture; improving the health of the Timorese people, especially women and children at greatest risk; drafting legislation that gives women equal rights in the land reform process and informing them of their legal rights; increasing female participation in strengthening and improving governance; increasing women's literacy; and supporting efforts to strengthen civil society, build an independent media, enforce the rule of law, and improve women's human rights.
