Country Snapshot: Cambodia and Anti-trafficking

Women learn how to organize and claim their rights in the workplace by participating in The Lessons Learned Peer Referral Workplace Advocacy program.

USAID/Cambodia supports increasing women's participation in political life, fighting trafficking in women and children including coordinating anti-trafficking donor activities and reducing domestic violence.

Ministry of Women's and Veterans' Affairs

USAID support to the Cambodian Ministry of Women's and Veterans' Affairs, in tandem with local and international NGOs, contributes to the national effort to prevent the trafficking of women and children through village-based prevention activities and information campaigns.

Cambodian Defenders Project (CDP)

CDP, with support from USAID, established the Center Against Trafficking. CDP is one of the few organizations that has the ability to address the issue of human trafficking from a legal perspective, and has worked to improve legislation, advocated for improved implementation of existing laws, and provided pro bono legal assistance to victims of trafficking. CDP, along with others working in the legal sector, has assisted in multiple stages of trials against traffickers.

International Justice Mission

Specializing in the rescue of young girls, boys, and women from lives of slavery and prostitution in Southeast Asian brothels, the International Justice Mission (IJM) program, with USAID support, provides assistance and training to local law officers and relevant NGOs in their fight against trafficking. Through this and other activities, USAID also supports legal aid to survivors of trafficking and women rescued from brothels.

Shelter Support

With USAID's assistance, the Hagar Shelter trains women at risk of trafficking to run catering, industrial sewing, hairdressing, and other small businesses. The shelter also teaches women about their legal rights and provides HIV/AIDS counseling. Sixty-two percent of the women who had participated for at least six months now live independently, maintain a steady job, and send their children to school. Another USAID-supported shelter provides special accommodation for non-Khmer-speaking victims, offering them assistance in reintegrating or finding alternative, enduring solutions.

Mith Samlanh Program

The Mith Samlanh ("Friends") program provides newly arrived migrant women in Phnom Penh information on safe, short-term housing, employment, and training opportunities. Vulnerable girls are trained in literacy and math to prepare them to return to school.
