Bangladesh Fast Facts Header

Women received the right to vote and stand for election in 1972. By 1973 there was a woman in Parliament.

The rate of maternal mortality per 100,000 live births has steadily improved from 850 in 1990, to 600 in 1995 to 380 in 2000.

About 78% of the female labor force work in agriculture. Only 8% are in industry and 11% in services.

Country Snapshot: Bangladesh and Democracy and Governance

USAID works to strengthen democratically elected local government institutions, increase public responsiveness of, and greater public contact with, parliament, and promotes protection of human rights through targeted measures in anti-trafficking, violence against women, rehabilitation of child laborers, and promotion of equitable treatment for girls and disadvantaged children in primary schools. USAID also supports the labor rights of migrant, urban garment workers, many of whom are women and are from rural areas.
