Country Snapshot: Bangladesh and Agro based Industries and Technology Development Project (ATDP II)

Photo of Ms.Umme Fatema sitting at her desk doing paper work.

Ms.Umme Fatema (43), a poultry entrepreneur
of Chittagong, started her business with only 100
birds in 1991. After 12 years, her company, Denm
Poultry Complex (pvt) Ltd., is a successful
poultry enterprise with a breeder farm and hatchery
selling up to 1.5 million day-old chicks per year,
a breeding farm with approximately 25,000 parent stock and a pellet feed mill with production of 9000 metric tons per year.

Since 1993, the following services have been provided to the company by ATDP II: hatchery and breeder farm management training, business plan analysis, training on least cost feed formulation and nutrition management in poultry pellets feed mills. Moreover, with the assistance from ATDP, a team from Denm poultry visited Malaysia to gather knowledge and to explore new product, market and export opportunities.

As a result of the contribution of the above mentioned services, the sales of the company have increased by about 107 percent in 2003 over the previous year with job growth of about 113 percent.

The company has introduced four new products and entered eight new markets. As part of her business expansion, one new hatchery, one breeder farm and one feed mill are now under construction. They plan to develop a contract farming model for its poultry farmers.

Ms. Fatema thanked ATDP-II for its support and stated, “I found ATDP-II services useful and relevant. The knowledge from the training on low cost feed formulation helped our staff to introduce least price pellet feed in the market. Hatchery management training helped us to learn and practice modern hatchery management so as to keep and maintain good quality.” She also said, “We have gathered knowledge and ideas about modern technology and appropriate machineries from the Malaysia trip organized by ATDP-II and are going to use those experiences in setting up our new feed mill, breeder farm and hatchery.”

ATDP-II is assisting Denm in sourcing software to automate their accounting and database operations.

Ms. Fatema, Managing Director, Denm Poultry is a member of different business associations. Since her ATDP-II support, she has been recognized / awarded jointly by South Asia Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Women Entrepreneur’s Council and Women Entrepreneur’s Association of Bangladesh as a successful women entrepreneur for the year of 2003.
