Mali's total fertility rate of 7 births per woman (2005) is one of the world's highest and has remained virtually unchanged since 1970.

Almost 24% of women are married before age 15, many of them forced into polygamous marriages.

Country Snapshot: Mali and Health

Programs to improve child survival and maternal health include vaccinations, use of insecticide-treated bed nets; combating malaria and distributing re-hydration salts.

Family planning and reproductive health services include social marketing of contraceptives, training of health workers, and providing information, education and communication.

To control the spread of HIV/AIDS, populations with high risk behaviors are targeted through behavioral change strategies, condom distribution, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
